Choosing the right skate
Share
We receive many questions and therefore try to answer the most common ones with a summary text here. We do not want the text to be copied by other figure skating stores, but clubs are welcome to share this information. We have extensive knowledge about skates and feet and long experience in fitting skates on feet. Contact us if you want more information.

Before purchasing skates, we need the following information to help you with the right skate:
-
Skater's skill level, possible test, training amount/week, jump knowledge
- Age, weight
- Which skates are used now and what size
- How long are both feet, measure according to instructions in our e-store, preferably with a real measuring stick from the shoe store
- How wide are the feet. Measure the widest foot's toe base with a tape measure all around.
It is important to understand that there is no brand that is best, but it is about finding the shoe that fits best on your foot.
We always help advise on the right shoe and blade. On the ready-made sets, the manufacturer has mounted blades that match the hardness of the shoe.
Unfortunately, we have no possibility to assist with buying or selling used skates
If you feel uncertain, it is always best to call or email us for consultation! We are here to make it right for you in your choice of skates!

Things to consider when choosing shoes
What is the best skate? Generally, there is no brand or model that is better than another. It is about finding a shoe that fits well on the foot and is stable enough, but not too stiff, for the skater who will use them. This means that an elite shoe like Edea Ice Fly or an elite blade like Goldseal or Supreme is not suitable for a beginner learning the basics of figure skating. It becomes difficult, stiff, and the hard shoe and the hard-to-skate blade can hinder the skater's development. Especially if it is a child (by child, we mean here a person who is not fully grown).
Factors to consider when choosing a shoe
Narrow feet
- The shoe must fit the foot. A narrow foot should have a narrow shoe. What is a narrow shoe? A narrow shoe can be narrow over the heel and/or narrow over the toes. If the skater is narrow and thin over the instep and heel, it is important that the shoe is too to avoid the shoe slipping.
- Likewise, a wide toe area becomes troublesome for a narrow toe base. Then the foot slides around inside the shoe. When the shoe is too wide for the foot, the risk of extra cartilage formations increases. That is, small lumps that can arise where there has been friction. The lumps can be very painful and it is not uncommon to see this in skaters who have used shoes that are too large and too wide for a long time.
- A narrow pointed toe base fits well when the shoe is narrow and pointed.
- A straight, more square toe area fits better in a roomier toe area, but if the heel is narrow it is important that the shoe also has a narrow heel.
Wide feet
If you have a foot that you consider a bit wider. Measure length and width around the base of the toes and we can easily identify if a wider width is preferable.
Jackson becomes W width
Edea - D width
Wifa LL for children and C or CC for adults.
Risport C-Comfort wide
Here it is important to identify where the foot is wide and what the foot shape looks like. If you have problems with regular shoes and always go up in size just to get your shoes on, then you have a really wide foot. Then the following shoes may be suitable for you:
- Jackson in D or W width. But not if you have a narrow heel.
- Wifa in CC width. Fits very well for duck-shaped feet that are quite wide on the sides before the toe base starts.
- Edea in E width. Here you come from the narrow toe.
Narrow feet
Wifa's shoes come in many widths. Contact us for advice on which width fits the skater's foot.
Edea's shoes also come in different widths. The standard width C is wide in the heel and narrow over the toes. D is wide in the heel and a bit roomier over the toes but still has a narrow toe area, B width is narrow over the toe and in the heel and better for a narrower heel than C.
Risport C is as wide in the heel as Edea's C but wider over the toe base. However, with a tapering toe. Contact us for width selection if you want to skate on Risport and have a narrower foot.
Jackson's standard widths R and W are both narrower in the heel and wider over the toes, but the R width is narrower and W fits more when you have a wider foot. However, if you are wide over the heel, you probably will not appreciate Jackson's W width.
Which brand and model fits
As a figure skater, you can skate on all the brands we sell at Tina's Figure Skating Shop. You can also change brands over the years. This does not negatively affect skating as long as the shoe fits well on the foot and the skater has the right size. For a growing child, we usually add a growth allowance so that the shoes will work for one year ahead. We can never know how much a child's foot will grow, but with about 1 cm margin, it usually becomes a sufficient growth allowance. When the feet no longer grow, the skaters wear out the shoes. How long a shoe lasts depends on how much it is used, who uses it, and how stable the shoe is in relation to the user. But about 1-1.5 years is the normal lifespan of a shoe used 5-7 days a week. The blade lasts significantly longer and therefore more expensive blades that are nice can easily be moved as long as the skater has the same size. Some blade sizes also fit two half sizes of shoes and can therefore be taken along when the skater goes up a 1/2 size.
